Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced the distinguished recipients of Assam’s Highest Civilian Awards, with Former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi receiving the prestigious Assam Baibhav Award 2023 in the field of Law and Justice.

Ranjan Gogoi, a luminary in the legal realm, embarked on his legal journey when he was enrolled as an advocate on August 28, 1978. His noteworthy contributions led to his appointment as a permanent judge of the Gauhati High Court on February 28, 2001. His illustrious career reached its zenith when he served as the 46th Chief Justice of India.

One of the pivotal moments during Justice Gogoi’s tenure as Chief Justice was the historic verdict in the longstanding Ram Jananmbhumi – Babri Masjid title suit. The Supreme Court, under his leadership, delivered a landmark judgment, bringing closure to a decades-old dispute.

In recognition of his exceptional service and commitment to the legal and judicial system, Assam has bestowed upon Justice Ranjan Gogoi the Assam Baibhav Award for the year 2023. Post his tenure as the Chief Justice, Ranjan Gogoi assumed a different role in the political landscape. President Ram Nath Kovind nominated him as a Member of the Rajya Sabha on March 16, 2020.
