In a solemn ceremony at the Albert Ekka War Memorial, Agartala, Governor of Tripura, Indrasena Reddy Nallu, flagged off the Maitri bike rally organized by Assam Rifles. The rally, themed “Fuelled by Freedom, Ride by Friendship,” marks the commemoration of the 52nd Vijay Diwas, an annual celebration honoring the sacrifices of the Indian Armed Forces during the Liberation War of Bangladesh.

The Maitri bike rally comprises 38 combatants and 25 civilians, symbolizing the camaraderie between the Indian Armed Forces and the people. The rally was initially flagged off from Maitri Bridge, Sabroom, on December 15, symbolizing the historical significance of the Maitri region in the Liberation War of Bangladesh.

As part of the event, the Pedaling Patriots, a bicycle rally by the Indian Army’s Spearcorps, was also flagged in. The Pedaling Patriots rally commenced from Dimapur on December 4, 2023, covering a significant distance to commemorate the historical events of Vijay Diwas.

Vijay Diwas holds special significance as it marks the victory of the joint forces of India and Bangladesh over the Pakistani Army, resulting in the liberation of Bangladesh. The surrender of more than 90,000 Pakistani soldiers to the Indian Army led to the birth of the new nation, Bangladesh.

Tripura played a pivotal role during the Liberation War, hosting a large number of Bangladeshi refugees, surpassing its own population in 1971. The state generously shared its resources with the refugees, showcasing solidarity during challenging times. Assam Rifles’ initiative to organize the Maitri bike rally is a tribute to the Armed Forces and the people of Tripura, acknowledging their vital role in the historic events of 1971. The rally serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom and the enduring friendship between nations.
