‘Man of the Year-2016’ Winner Dr. Mahanta Dies at 82

Assamese writer and eminent educationalist Dr. Prafulla Mahanta passed away on Friday i.e. 2 September at the age of 82.

The writer had been suffering from a serious illness for a long time and passed away today morning in a hospital in Assam’s Guwahati. He was kept at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for his treatment.

The ‘Man of the year-2016’ award winner Dr. Mahanta’s body is presently kept at his residence for his last rites which are to be performed later in the day. Thousands of people have gathered at his residence to pay their tribute to the deceased soul. He has received the ‘Man of the year award’ from the Engkhong Welfare Society in Bijni, Chirang district.

Along with being the ‘Man of the year-2016’ award winner, Dr. Mahanta was popular throughout Assam as an unbiased, fair, and honest journalist, pioneer activist for indigenous people’s rights, and as keen observer.
