Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday urged media professionals to adapt to rapid technological advancements, including artificial intelligence (AI) and digital platforms, while maintaining honesty and integrity in news reporting.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the two-day bi-annual state conference and journalist workshop of the Tripura Working Journalists Association. The event brought together journalists from across the state to discuss the evolving role of media in the digital era.

Media as the Fourth Pillar of Democracy
Addressing the gathering, the chief minister described the media as the fourth pillar of democracy. He said it plays a crucial role in reflecting social realities and shaping public opinion.
Saha noted that the rapid expansion of social media and web-based platforms has transformed how information flows. News now spreads faster than ever, increasing both opportunities and risks for the media industry.
“In the age of AI and digital platforms, accuracy and responsible reporting are more important than ever,” he said. He stressed that misinformation and unverified content can create confusion and disrupt social harmony. Therefore, journalists must uphold professional ethics and fact-based reporting.
‘Embrace the Change’ in the Digital Age
The workshop, themed “Embrace the Change,” focuses on evolving media practices in response to technological transformation. Discussions during the programme highlighted the need for skill development, digital literacy, and the responsible use of AI tools in journalism.
Saha emphasized the importance of continuous professional training to enhance efficiency and ensure that journalists keep pace with global developments. He said technological adaptation should not compromise journalistic values but rather strengthen them.
The chief minister also described the present state government as media-friendly. He said the administration has taken steps, within available resources, to support journalists and promote a constructive relationship between the government and the press.
Government Monitoring and Information Flow
Highlighting administrative measures, Saha said the government receives daily updates from agencies and district-level officials on key issues, including law and order. He explained that a monitoring system has been introduced to streamline the flow of information and improve coordination.
Such mechanisms, he said, help ensure timely responses to emerging challenges and enhance transparency in governance.
He added that factual and balanced reporting plays a significant role in increasing social awareness and strengthening public accountability. Responsible journalism, he noted, helps citizens stay informed and encourages democratic participation.
Launch of ‘Madhiyam’
During the programme, the chief minister unveiled the association’s mouthpiece, ‘Madhiyam,’ marking a significant moment for the journalists’ body. The publication aims to highlight media-related issues and serve as a platform for professional exchange among journalists.
Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy, along with association president Bijay Pal and general secretary Sunil Debnath, attended the event.
The conference is expected to deliberate on emerging challenges in journalism, including the ethical use of AI, combating fake news, and strengthening the credibility of mainstream media.
As digital transformation accelerates, Saha’s message underscored a central theme: innovation and integrity must go hand in hand. By embracing technological change while adhering to ethical standards, Tripura’s media fraternity can continue to play a vital role in safeguarding democracy and informing society.
