The Foul Truth (Amakpa Achumba), a 2019 Manipuri film directed by Priyakanta Laishram, will be screened at Chiang Mai University in Thailand on October 10, 2023, as a part of the university’s film showcase that will concentrate on movies related to social issues happening in South Asian countries. This will be the film’s 33rd overall international screening and its first screening in Thailand after it was previously screened at 32 international film festivals.

The movie, which features Priyakanta Laishram, Harry Tourangbam, and Rojesh Saikhom in key roles, centers on the confined and traumatized life of Thoithoiba, a teenager who was raped and sexually assaulted as a child by a member of his family.

The Foul Truth, in addition to being a critically acclaimed film, is regarded as one of the most unconventional and daring films to come out of Northeast India due to its sensitive and realistic portrayal of survivors of male rape and child sexual assault. It was the first film in Northeast India to address the subject of male rape.

The director of the film, Priyakanta Laishram, said in a statement regarding the film, “I am glad that the film is still going places, even years after its initial release. I encountered a lot of opposition when I was making the movie; some organizations even threatened to ban it. Today, I take immense pride that my film is acknowledged for its unique and daring theme.”

The film had previously won Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Symbiosis Allied Media Awards 2019, Best Film on Other Social Issues at the St. Leuven International Short Film Festival 2019, Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Best Sound Design at the World Freedom Film Festival 2018; Best Actor in a Motion Picture—Drama at Jalandhar National Short Film Festival 2019; Best Actor Award—Critics and Best Screenplay at Short Motion Pictures Wave National Festival 2019; Unconventional Film Award at the Human Rights Asian Film Festival 2019; and Best Background Score at the Indian Independent Film Festival 2018.
