Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma recently conducted a comprehensive review of several major infrastructure projects in the rapidly growing New Shillong Township. The inspection comes as part of the government’s larger mission to build a modern, sustainable urban hub that will complement the growing needs of the state’s capital region.

The Chief Minister, accompanied by key government officials, visited multiple project sites to assess progress and provide directions for timely execution. Among the projects reviewed were key roads, water supply systems, power infrastructure, and administrative complexes that form the backbone of the New Shillong Township development.

Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said, “New Shillong Township is not just an expansion of our capital city—it’s a vision for the future. We aim to develop a city that offers robust infrastructure, is environment-friendly, and can meet the future demands of our growing population.”

One of the key areas of focus was the construction of arterial roads and internal road networks. The Chief Minister inspected ongoing road-laying works and directed officials to ensure the use of durable materials and adherence to safety standards. He stressed the need for time-bound completion, noting that road connectivity is crucial for both public convenience and the smooth implementation of other infrastructure components.

Another major highlight of the visit was the inspection of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme Phase III. This project is expected to significantly improve water availability in the area, addressing both current needs and future demand. CM Sangma expressed satisfaction with the progress and encouraged the Public Health Engineering Department to fast-track the remaining work.

The review also included the proposed site for the Integrated Administrative Complex, which is set to house various government departments and serve as a central hub for administrative functions. Sangma emphasized the importance of a well-planned, centralized administrative facility to improve governance and reduce bureaucratic delays.

In addition, the Chief Minister assessed the work on electricity distribution infrastructure, including power substations and underground cabling projects. He highlighted the need for reliable and modern electricity supply systems to support both residential and commercial growth in the township. Sangma urged the Power Department to integrate renewable energy solutions where feasible, aligning with the state’s sustainability goals.

The development of New Shillong Township is part of the Meghalaya government’s larger push toward balanced regional development. With Shillong city facing pressure from increasing population and urban congestion, the new township is being envisioned as a strategic solution to decongest the capital while offering high-quality urban amenities.

Residents and local leaders have welcomed the Chief Minister’s proactive approach, expressing hope that the direct oversight will expedite completion and ensure better implementation of plans. Many believe that the success of the New Shillong Township will set a benchmark for future urban planning projects in the Northeast.

As part of the review, the Chief Minister also held discussions with engineers, contractors, and local stakeholders to identify bottlenecks and explore ways to resolve them efficiently. He assured that the government would extend all necessary support, including funds and technical assistance, to remove hurdles and maintain project timelines.

In conclusion, the Chief Minister’s site visit and detailed review underscore the Meghalaya government’s firm commitment to transforming New Shillong Township into a model city. Through focused leadership, strategic planning, and active community engagement, Meghalaya aims to create a dynamic urban space that reflects the aspirations of its people.
