The Mizoram government has announced a cash reward of Rs 25 lakh each for Indian women’s hockey players Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi. The state recognised their contribution to India’s gold medal-winning campaign at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
The announcement followed India’s victory over defending champions China in the women’s hockey final. The Indian team won 1-0, ending a 44-year wait for the Asian Games gold medal.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma congratulated the team and praised the two players from the state. He particularly acknowledged Lalremsiami, an Arjuna Award recipient, for her contribution to the historic victory.
Mizoram Recognises Historic Asian Games Achievement
The reward will be given under the Mizoram Sports Incentives Cash Award Scheme. Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced the decision through a social media post.
He described the achievement as historic for Mizoram. Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi have become the first sportspersons from the state to win gold medals at the Asian Games.
The state government also extended its best wishes to both players and the Indian women’s hockey team for their future competitions.
The recognition highlights the contribution of athletes from Mizoram to Indian hockey. The state has produced several players who have represented India at national and international competitions.
Lalremsiami Scores Winning Goal Against China
Lalremsiami played a decisive role in the Asian Games final. She scored the only goal of the match as India defeated China 1-0.
The victory secured India’s first Asian Games women’s hockey gold since 1982. It also ended the team’s long wait for the title.
Lalremsiami has represented India in major international tournaments. She also became the first woman Olympian from Mizoram after representing the country at the Tokyo Olympics.
Her contribution to Indian hockey has brought recognition to the state. The latest cash award adds to the honours she has received during her sporting career.
India Secures Direct Qualification for Los Angeles Olympics
India’s Asian Games gold medal also secured the team an automatic berth at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The qualification gives the women’s team an opportunity to prepare for the next Olympic competition without going through the usual qualification route.
Hockey India has separately announced cash rewards for the entire team. Each player will receive Rs 11 lakh, while every member of the support staff will receive Rs 5.5 lakh.
A Proud Moment for Mizoram
The achievement of Lalremsiami and Lalthantluangi has brought national attention to Mizoram’s contribution to Indian hockey.
The state government’s announcement recognises their role in a landmark sporting achievement. Their success also places a spotlight on the sporting talent emerging from the Northeast.
India’s victory over China marked a significant moment for women’s hockey. With the Asian Games title secured and Olympic qualification confirmed, the team will now turn its attention towards future international competitions.
The Rs 25 lakh reward for each player reflects Mizoram’s recognition of their contribution to the national team and the state’s sporting history.
