Vanlalvena has sought financial and technical support from the World Bank for a series of infrastructure and economic development projects in Mizoram during a meeting with senior officials in Washington DC.
According to officials, the lone Rajya Sabha MP from Mizoram met four senior World Bank officials dealing with India, Bangladesh, and Bhutan affairs on Tuesday. Among those present at the meeting was Executive Director Parameswar Iyer.
The discussions focused on securing assistance for infrastructure, connectivity, and livelihood projects suited to Mizoram’s unique geographical and economic conditions.
Officials said the proposals aimed to improve transportation systems, create sustainable employment opportunities, and strengthen economic growth in the hilly northeastern state.

MP Presents Multiple Development Proposals
During the meeting, Vanlalvena reportedly presented several development proposals designed to address long-standing infrastructure and livelihood challenges in Mizoram.
One of the major proposals involved multipurpose rainwater harvesting projects across different parts of the state. Officials said the initiative could help improve water management and support local communities facing seasonal water shortages.
The MP also proposed the development of bamboo-based industries in Mizoram. The state possesses rich bamboo resources, and leaders believe bamboo-related industries can generate employment while promoting environmentally sustainable economic growth.
Apart from bamboo industries, Vanlalvena highlighted the need for agro-based and forest-based industries in the state. Officials said such projects could strengthen rural livelihoods and support local entrepreneurs.
The MP also proposed the construction of flyovers in Aizawl to ease growing traffic congestion in the state capital.
Focus on Sustainable and Hill-Friendly Infrastructure
According to officials, the proposals reflected the need for infrastructure solutions suited to Mizoram’s mountainous terrain and environmental conditions.
Vanlalvena also suggested installing solar-powered portable outdoor stairways in Aizawl. Officials explained that the project could improve pedestrian mobility in steep and densely populated areas of the city.
Aizawl, like many hill towns in the Northeast, faces infrastructure challenges due to difficult terrain and rapid urban growth. Therefore, authorities continue exploring innovative and environmentally friendly urban solutions.
Officials said the MP stressed the importance of sustainable development while presenting the projects before World Bank representatives.

Officials familiar with the discussions said World Bank representatives responded positively to the proposals presented by the Mizoram MP.

They also reportedly expressed interest in understanding Mizoram’s development needs and geographical challenges in greater detail.
Sources said the World Bank may examine possibilities for financial assistance, technical guidance, and project collaboration in the coming months.
The discussions reportedly included conversations on sustainable development models, infrastructure financing, and livelihood generation in hill states.
However, officials clarified that no formal agreements or funding approvals have been announced yet.
Infrastructure Remains Major Challenge in Mizoram
