Mokokchung spurious liquor concerns have intensified in Nagaland after four people died and four others reportedly fell ill in Mangkolemba Sub-Division. Police suspect the victims consumed adulterated or spurious liquor, but investigators have not yet established the exact medical cause of the deaths.
Mangkolemba Police Station has registered a case and arrested six people in connection with the incident. Authorities have also seized suspected adulterated liquor as they investigate its source, supply chain and distribution.
Mokokchung spurious liquor case triggers probe
According to Mokokchung Police, the four deaths occurred in the Mangkolemba Sub-Division in recent days. Four other people reportedly became ill after consuming liquor, raising concern over a possible common source.
Police registered Case No. 002 under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant provisions of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1989. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths and illnesses.
Police said they are also tracing the suspected liquor from its source through its supply chain. The investigation will seek to identify people involved in its manufacture, transportation, distribution or sale.
Six arrested as police seize suspected liquor
Police have arrested six people so far and seized suspected adulterated liquor. However, authorities have stressed that the exact cause of the deaths and illnesses remains under investigation.
Medical findings and other supporting evidence will determine whether contaminated alcohol caused the deaths. Therefore, the term “spurious liquor” remains a matter of suspicion while the investigation continues.
Earlier reports from Mangkolemba said authorities had conducted raids at suspected liquor outlets after reports of sudden deaths and illness. Officials also stressed that no medical report had initially established adulterated alcohol as the cause.
Mokokchung spurious liquor warning reaches wider areas
Mokokchung Police have warned that liquor from the suspected source may have reached other parts of Nagaland. As a result, authorities have urged people to avoid liquor from unknown, unauthorised or doubtful sources.
Police have also advised people to seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms after consuming liquor. These symptoms include gastric pain, dizziness, blurred vision, breathing difficulties, severe headache and loss of consciousness.
The warning comes as authorities continue efforts to identify the suspected supply network. Police have asked residents to report suspected sales or storage of adulterated liquor and provide information about its source or distribution.
Health concerns grow after recent deaths
The Mokokchung spurious liquor case comes shortly after another suspected liquor-related incident in Tuensang district. Police there reported nine deaths in Tuensang Town and Chendang Saddle on September 10 and 11, while investigations continued into the circumstances.
Tuensang Police said the deaths had a direct or indirect circumstantial link with alcohol consumption but cautioned that spurious or adulterated liquor had not been scientifically and conclusively established as the cause. Authorities also seized hundreds of liquor bottles and beer cans during searches.
Nagaland Police subsequently warned residents in several districts, including Mokokchung, against consuming liquor amid concerns over a suspected tainted supply. The state operates under the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, which restricts the possession, sale, consumption and manufacture of liquor.
Mokokchung spurious liquor probe remains underway
The latest deaths have prompted renewed scrutiny of illegal and potentially adulterated liquor supplies in Nagaland. However, authorities have yet to establish a final medical cause for the four deaths in Mangkolemba.
Meanwhile, police are continuing to examine the seized liquor and trace its distribution network. The investigation could determine whether the suspected alcohol was responsible for the illnesses and deaths and whether others remain at risk.
For now, authorities have urged the public to avoid liquor from unauthorised sources and report suspected adulterated products. Further medical and investigative findings will be important in establishing what caused the deaths and whether the suspected liquor supply was responsible.
