In a strong political statement delivered at a regional summit in Shillong on June 29, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma emphasized the need for a common regional voice in national politics. He asserted that the NPP unifying Northeast is not just an idea—it is a mission with growing support.
“The NPP is the only party that truly understands the Northeast. We are not outsiders—we are the voice of this region,” Sangma declared.
He urged leaders from all eight Northeastern states to rally behind a shared political platform, one that could represent the unique challenges and aspirations of the region at the national level.
The Role of NPP in Unifying Northeast States
The National People’s Party (NPP), founded by late leader P.A. Sangma, is currently the only national party based in Northeast India. Under Conrad Sangma’s leadership, it has expanded its presence in Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, aiming to become the principal vehicle for regional unity.
The idea of NPP unifying Northeast resonates strongly as other national parties have historically overlooked the region’s specific concerns.
Why NPP Unifying Northeast Matters Now
Sangma explained that with growing socio-economic disparities and political marginalization, the Northeast needs one consolidated voice. According to him, NPP’s grassroots presence allows it to serve as that unifying force.
Focus areas include:
- Infrastructure and border development
- Cultural preservation and tribal rights
- Youth entrepreneurship and job creation
- Regional peace and security
The NPP unifying Northeast represents a collective identity while embracing each state’s unique culture.
NPP’s Political Growth Across the Region
The NPP has become a key political player, especially after leading the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) and securing seats in the legislative assemblies of other northeastern states.
This growth strengthens its position as the primary vehicle for regional cooperation and political stability. Sangma emphasized that the party’s expansion is part of a long-term vision to prepare for the 2029 general elections with a united regional front.

Regional Voice on National Platforms
Sangma criticized the national media and parties for frequently neglecting Northeast issues. He stressed that without representation rooted in the region, the Northeast will continue to lack visibility in major policy discussions.
The NPP unifying Northeast offers not only a seat at the table but also the power to shape national conversations on:
- AFSPA and security policies
- Environmental challenges and disaster management
- Indigenous autonomy and governance
“We must speak as one—not to conform, but to be heard,” he said.
A Call to Youth and Voters
Conrad Sangma also appealed to the youth and civil society leaders across the Northeast to become active participants in this movement.
Join local NPP youth chapters
