After days of travel chaos, train services resume Northeast India, bringing relief to thousands. The region had suffered widespread disruption due to landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains. This past week, key routes in Tripura, South Assam, Manipur, and Mizoram were completely shut down, affecting passengers and freight movement alike.
Now, after rapid repair efforts by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), normal operations are back on track. Rail services were restored on June 30, enabling smooth travel just in time for the busy monsoon transit period.
Landslides Severely Impacted Train Routes
The disruption began when continuous rainfall caused massive landslides in the Lumding–Badarpur rail section, a crucial corridor that links lower Assam to the rest of the Northeast. As a result, important trains like the Silchar–Agartala Express and Agartala–Tejas Rajdhani had to be suspended.
Passengers in Mizoram and Tripura were left stranded, while businesses faced delivery delays and rising logistics costs.
“This was the longest disruption in months,” said a resident from Silchar. “We had no alternative transport available.”
How Indian Railways Reopened the Tracks
To ensure train services resume Northeast India without delay, the Indian Railways deployed multiple restoration teams. These teams worked non-stop to clear debris, stabilize soil conditions, and test track safety.
By June 29, freight services resumed in some sections. Full passenger service restoration followed on June 30. Importantly, this quick turnaround was possible thanks to pre-positioned disaster response protocols.

Northeast Economy Benefits as Trains Resume
The restoration of train services in Northeast India has already had a positive impact. According to the Tripura Chamber of Commerce, local markets are stabilizing. During the disruption, vegetable and fuel prices in Agartala rose by 20–25%.
Now that supply chains have reopened, vendors are restocking shelves, and transit times for goods have improved.
“Prices are returning to normal,” said a trader from Agartala’s main market. “We rely heavily on trains for daily goods.”
Operational Train Services as of June 30
NFR confirmed that the following train services are now running:
- Silchar–Agartala Passenger
- Guwahati–Silchar Express
- Tripura Sundari Express (via Lumding)
- Agartala–Sealdah Kanchanjunga Express
Additional bogies were attached to accommodate the backlog of stranded travelers.
Passengers are encouraged to use the NTES apps or IRCTC website for real-time updates.
Passenger Advisory and Helplines
With train services resumed in Northeast India, passengers should continue to stay updated on weather and route status during monsoon months. The NFR helpline (139) and RailMin Twitter handle provide fast alerts for travel disruptions.
NFR officials also advise passengers to avoid unnecessary travel during red-alert rainfall periods, though current services remain stable.
Why Train Services Are Lifelines in Northeast India
For many in Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, and South Assam, train lines are the most affordable and dependable mode of transportation. Road links in the region are often underdeveloped or impassable during rain. That’s why resuming train services in Northeast India is more than a logistical victory—it’s a socio-economic one.
