The Tripura Police Headquarters(PHQ), on Monday, August 23, witnessed a massive gherao in front of its gate carried out by the activist of the youth congress division of the state. The Youth Congress activists gheraoed the police headquarters in protest of the attack that happened on the residence of the BJP turned Congress leader Keshab Sarkar.

The attack over Sarkar’s residence at Maljishpur on Saturday, August 20 was, allegedly, carried out by workers of the ruling BJP party.

Sarkar, who resigned from the BJP to join Congress, speaking to the media informed that he made several calls to Jirani Police Station under whose jurisdiction the case falls but alleges that the cops arrived several hours late after the incident occurred.

In a sign of protest against the BJP workers’ action, the Youth Congress Division of the state today blocked the entrance of the police headquarters and demanded the suspension of the sub-divisional police officer(SDPO). Earlier, on August 11, in Jirania under the same SDPO senior Congress leader MLA Sudip Roy Barman was assaulted as well.

Birajit Sinha, the Tripura Pradesh Congress president speaking to the media alleged BJP-backed goons being involved in the Saturday’s incident and claimed that the attacker had a minister’s support.

The CPI(M), on the other hand, too accused BJP’s involvement in the incident. Members of the CPI(M) along with former CM Manik Sarkar visited Jirania to take a note of the situation.

Manik Sarkar, condemned the BJP workers action by stating that ‘Tripura has become a safe haven for the criminals.’

Tripura Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, however, refuted all claims of the oppositions saying that Keshab Sarkar has failed to provide any evidence despite his home being under CCTV surveillance. Speaking to media Chowdhury said, “He filed a complaint against some 30 people and said BJP workers attacked his home. Let police investigate and submit a report. There is no prima facie evidence that any BJP activist was involved in such an incident. It is totally fabricated.”.
