The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is working round the clock to restore rail connectivity in the Lumding–Badarpur Hill Section, which has been severely disrupted due to multiple landslides triggered by heavy rainfall. The affected stretch, located between KM 108/6-8, is crucial for connecting the Barak Valley with the rest of Assam and the northeast region.

To personally assess the damage and motivate the teams on the ground, NFR General Manager Shri Chetan Kumar Shrivastava visited the site. His presence highlighted the railway’s strong commitment to early restoration. During his inspection, he instructed that maximum manpower and machinery be mobilized immediately to speed up the restoration process and ensure the timely resumption of train services in this strategic hill section.

Massive Restoration Efforts Underway

In a massive operation, NFR teams are removing around 20,000 cubic meters of slipped earth from hill slopes to clear the track alignment. Of this, 14,100 cubic meters have already been removed. An additional 2,850 cubic meters out of the 3,000 cubic meters targeted for removal from the track area has also been cleared. Furthermore, 1,27,000 cubic meters of earth have been successfully removed from vulnerable surrounding slopes to prevent further slips.

Drainage improvement is a key part of the work to avoid future disruptions. Around 600 meters of kutcha drains are being constructed, while 400 meters of existing hillside drains are being cleaned. For slope stabilization, over 12,000 square meters of jungle cutting has been done, and 1,200 square meters of hill slopes have been secured with non-woven geotextile material.

Round-the-Clock Operations Despite Tough Conditions

Despite challenging terrain and continuous rainfall, NFR has deployed a large workforce and heavy machinery at the site. Earth removal from hill slopes is being conducted with dumpers operating along an 800-meter narrow and slippery path, significantly slowing down progress. In areas where machines cannot reach, especially in cuttings not accessible by road, eight excavators are working in series, followed by manual clearing due to limited space.

The presence of the General Manager has significantly boosted the morale of the staff, who continue to work tirelessly to restore normalcy. “Safety and early restoration are our top priorities. Our teams are working relentlessly despite difficult terrain and unpredictable weather,” said an NFR official at the site.

Temporary Train Cancellations for Passenger Safety

Until the restoration work is completed, certain trains have been fully or partially cancelled to ensure passenger safety. NFR urges passengers to stay updated through official railway channels and announcements for the latest information on train services and restoration progress.

The Lumding–Badarpur Hill Section plays a vital role in maintaining connectivity to southern Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur. The timely restoration of this route is crucial for the movement of both passengers and goods in the region.
