Tripura is on high alert as continuous torrential rain has caused major rivers to swell, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for several districts. In response, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has instructed all district administrations to intensify surveillance and preparedness efforts across the state.

With rivers swelling rapidly, the risk of flooding looms large. The government has activated disaster response protocols, calling on citizens to remain alert and avoid flood-prone zones. The IMD has warned of more rain over the next 48 hours, especially in areas near major rivers like the Manu, Howrah, and Gomati.

Tripura Under River Swell Threat as Heavy Rains Continue

The IMD red alert covers Dhalai, Gomati, and South Tripura districts, areas that are already witnessing signs of flood-like situations due to river swell. As per the Water Resources Department, water levels in several rivers are either nearing or exceeding the danger mark.

District authorities have deployed teams to monitor riverbanks and embankments. Precautionary sandbagging has started in vulnerable zones, while relief shelters are being set up for at-risk families.

CM Directs Emergency Protocols to Tackle River Swell Impact

During a high-level meeting on Thursday night, CM Manik Saha directed the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), local police, and civic bodies to remain fully mobilized. He emphasized swift coordination in flood-prone zones, especially along the Gomati and Khowai rivers, which are swelling rapidly.

“Every effort is being made to minimize damage and safeguard lives. Further, people should stay away from riverbanks and report any breaches or waterlogging to local authorities immediately,” CM Saha stated.

River Swell Prompts Evacuations and Road Closures

In the wake of the river swell, several families in low-lying areas of Udaipur and Ambassa have been moved to temporary relief shelters. Traffic has been disrupted in some parts of Gomati district due to road inundation. Moreover, police have advised people to avoid non-essential travel.

The state Education Department has suspended classes in schools located within red alert zones. Health departments have also been alerted to prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases in the aftermath of flooding.

Tripura’s Monsoon Woes: A Recurring Challenge

This is the second consecutive year that Tripura has faced significant river swell threats due to early monsoon rains. Experts link the current situation to a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal feeding moisture into the region.

Meteorologists warn that continued downpours may trigger not only flash floods but also landslides in hilly areas bordering Mizoram and Manipur. The SDMA has placed its rescue teams on standby with boats, medical kits, and emergency supplies.

River Swell Alert Part of Larger Northeast Rain Crisis

Tripura’s river swell crisis mirrors weather-related emergencies across the Northeast. Meghalaya, for instance, is battling landslides and massive traffic jams due to incessant rains on NH-6 near Jorabat. Assam, too, has issued flood alerts in several districts.

Call to Action: Stay Safe, Stay Informed

Residents are urged to follow updates from the IMD and local authorities. Avoid riverbanks, flooded roads, and unstable slopes. For emergencies, the SDMA helpline 1070 is operational round the clock.
