Sikkim celebrated a milestone in social welfare with the launch of the Aama Samman Diwas on Sunday, August 10, 2025.
The event, held at Rangpo Playground, was marked by the announcement of a massive ₹128 crore scheme to provide financial aid to 32,000 mothers across the state.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said the program aims to recognize the invaluable contributions of mothers while providing tangible financial support to their households.
Rs 40,000 Assistance in Two Phases
Under the initiative, each eligible mother will receive ₹40,000 in two installments of ₹20,000 each.
Along with the cash assistance, recipients will also be given hot water bottles as part of the welfare package.
The first phase of disbursement will begin immediately, while the second phase will be rolled out in the coming months.
Chief Minister’s Vision for Women’s Welfare
Addressing thousands of attendees, CM Tamang emphasized that the Aama Samman Diwas is not just a celebration but a commitment to empowering mothers.
He said,
“Mothers are the backbone of our society. By honoring them, we strengthen the foundation of our homes and communities.”
The CM also highlighted the state government’s broader focus on women-centric schemes and livelihood opportunities.
Cultural Celebrations and Emotional Moments
The inaugural event featured cultural performances, traditional dances, and speeches celebrating motherhood.
Many attendees were visibly emotional as the CM personally interacted with beneficiaries, presenting them with symbolic cheques and gifts.
Elderly women in traditional attire expressed gratitude, saying the aid would help them manage household expenses and children’s education.
Why Aama Samman Diwas Matters
Sikkim has faced unique demographic and socio-economic challenges over the years.
The launch of Aama Samman Diwas aims to address these issues by directly supporting mothers often the primary caregivers and decision-makers in rural households.
Experts say such targeted schemes can improve nutrition, healthcare access, and educational outcomes for children.
A Massive ₹128 Crore Investment in Families
The program’s total outlay of ₹128 crore makes it one of the largest state-funded welfare projects in Sikkim’s history.
Government officials explained that the funding will be drawn from the state budget, prioritizing social welfare and rural development.
The initiative also aligns with national policies promoting women’s financial inclusion.
Public Response and Beneficiary Voices
Residents welcomed the move, calling it a “lifeline” for families struggling with rising costs.
One beneficiary, Maya Gurung from Pakyong, said,
“With this money, I can invest in my children’s education and repair my home before winter.”
Community leaders praised the scheme’s inclusivity, noting that it covers mothers from both rural and urban areas.
Future of the Scheme
The state government has indicated plans to make Aama Samman Diwas an annual event. Officials are also exploring the possibility of integrating healthcare benefits, skill development programs, and micro-loans into future editions of the scheme.
This could turn the initiative into a comprehensive women’s empowerment platform.
A Call for Continued Support
CM Tamang urged citizens, community groups, and private organizations to support the cause. He stressed that uplifting mothers uplifts entire families, creating a ripple effect across society. The launch of Aama Samman Diwas marks a transformative step in Sikkim’s social welfare history.
By combining financial assistance with public recognition, the state is setting an example for other regions to follow.
As 32,000 mothers receive their first installment, the program promises not just monetary relief but also renewed dignity and empowerment for women across the Himalayan state.
