16-year-old from Rajasthan balances classical dance, martial arts, law studies, and authorship
In a landmark moment for Indian classical dance, 16-year-old Tanaya Yadav from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan has etched her name into the record books by becoming the youngest person in the world to earn the prestigious Sangeet Prabhakar Degree in Kathak.
Officially recognized on June 19, 2025, her accomplishment stands out in a discipline where mastery typically takes many years of disciplined training and gradual progression through graded exams and performances. Traditionally, dancers spend decades preparing for this level; Tanaya achieved it at 16 years, 11 months, and 24 days, setting a new world record.
The Sangeet Prabhakar is awarded by Prayag Sangeet Samiti, one of India’s most respected institutions for classical music and dance education, based in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
A Multifaceted Prodigy: Achievement in Karate and Writing
Tanaya’s achievements extend far beyond the dance floor. In the 1st Indo Nepal International Karate Championship held in Punjab in 2022, she secured a gold medal in the Kata Category. She is also the author of Kathak: The Rhythm of Inner Strength, a book available through Amazon. The publication reflects her interest in presenting Kathak not only as a performing art but also as a source of discipline, confidence and personal development.
Kathak, one of India’s eight classical dance forms, demands technical precision, emotional depth, and scholarly understanding of theory and history. Tanaya’s record-breaking achievement has made her a source of pride and a potential catalyst for increased interest in Kathak among local youth. It combines rhythm, movement, expression and narrative, requiring dancers to develop both physical control and a deep understanding of the art’s theoretical and cultural traditions.
Training in Jaipur Gharana
Tanaya received her Kathak training under Guru Harish Gangani, a respected exponent of the Jaipur Gharana. The tradition is known for its intricate rhythmic patterns, powerful footwork and expressive storytelling.
According to those familiar with her training, Tanaya’s development was guided by the objective of building a strong and authentic foundation in Kathak rather than merely pursuing records. Her achievement is regarded as the result of sustained discipline, consistent practice and dedicated mentorship.
Pursuing Law and Professional Work
Tanaya Yadav is currently pursuing a five-year integrated B.Com. LL.B. (Honours) programme at Symbiosis Law School, Pune, where she is specializing in business law and legal frameworks.
Alongside her studies, she founded Legal Nexus in June 2026. As its Founder and CEO, she has created a legal resource website offering drafting templates, court directories and reference guides for law students and legal professionals.
Her earlier academic and professional experiences include research and analysis work at Fortis Hospital, where she studied psychological disorders, diagnostic standards and clinical treatments. She also interned at the American Centre, U.S. Embassy, where she presented on emerging technologies addressing global challenges and worked on robotic models using Lego and customized programming.
In January 2023, she served as a team leader with NITI Aayog and the Energy Swaraj Foundation, contributing to the planning and execution of a global climate assembly event. She also represented India as a Kazakhstan delegate during international virtual summits organised by the British Council and RIDS, while managing event inventory, budgeting and costume design.
Family Background and Other Achievements
She is the daughter of renowned Karate Coach Dr. Pradeep Kumar Yadav, Fit India Ambassador, and award-winning author of “Shotokan Karate: Easiest Way To Get Black Belt,” also available on Amazon. Dr. Yadav has selflessly trained over 55,000 underprivileged children and holds more than 45 national and international awards, including 6 world records.
Why This Matters
Tanaya’s record highlights that classical arts like Kathak can thrive with dedicated mentorship and disciplined practice, even among today’s youth. Her dual excellence in Kathak and Karate, combined with her legal studies and leadership roles, makes her a compelling role model for young people balancing tradition, sport, academics, and innovation.
As she continues her journey at Symbiosis Law School while managing her entrepreneurial venture Legal Nexus, Tanaya Yadav stands as a testament to what young Indians can achieve when passion meets perseverance.
A Role Model for Young People
Tanaya Yadav’s record-setting accomplishment highlights the potential of young people to excel in India’s classical arts through disciplined practice and committed mentorship. Her achievements in Kathak and karate, together with her legal education, entrepreneurial initiative and leadership experience, present a rare combination of tradition, sport, academics and innovation. Her journey may also encourage greater interest in Kathak among young people in Rajasthan and across India, demonstrating that classical dance continues to remain relevant and aspirational for the younger generation.
Keeping Kathak relevant for a new generation
Kathak is one of India’s eight recognized classical dance traditions. Its practice demands more than physical technique, requiring command over rhythm, expression, storytelling, repertoire and the theoretical foundations of the art. Tanaya Yadav’s journey offer an example of how India’s classical traditions can continue to find space in the lives of young people while coexisting with modern education, technology, entrepreneurship and sport.
Her achievement is significant not only because of the age at which she completed her formal Kathak qualification, but also because of the breadth of her interests. From the Kathak stage to the Karate arena and from law studies to technology and entrepreneurship, her journey reflects an increasingly multidimensional generation of young Indian achievers. For young dancers in Rajasthan and beyond, Tanaya’s story could serve as an encouragement to approach classical arts with patience, discipline and long-term commitment while pursuing contemporary academic and professional ambitions alongside them.
