There are frequent cases of smuggling of rhino horn in Assam. Three accused have been arrested for smuggling rhinoceros. Forest officials in Assam on Thursday arrested three persons for their alleged involvement in the illegal trade in rhino horns in the Golaghat district. According to forest officials, all three have been involved in the smuggling of rhino horns near Kaziranga National Park.
District Forest Officer Ramesh Kumar Gogoi has given more information. He said one of the accused was nabbed from the Baghmari area near Kaziranga. After his confession, two others were also apprehended. Further investigation is going on.
Earlier this year, a case of poachers using tranquilizers to remove rhino horns came to light in Assam’s Orang National Park. Since then the Assam Forest Department is facing a new challenge to protect the one-horned rhinoceros in the state.
According to reports, poachers in the national park chopped off an adult rhinoceros without killing it. The forest officials came to know about the incident on 9 May. An adult male rhino, aged 10-12 years, was found in the Muwamari area inside the forest.
