The Border Security Force (BSF) in Tripura seized narcotics and other contraband worth Rs 3 crore in two separate operations conducted on May 2 and 3. The operations were carried out in the border areas of Sepahijala and Dhalai districts, where BSF personnel intensified surveillance to curb illegal trafficking from across the Indo-Bangladesh border.
According to BSF officials, the first operation took place near the Srimantapur border outpost in Sepahijala district. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, BSF jawans launched a late-night ambush and intercepted a group of smugglers attempting to sneak through dense vegetation under the cover of darkness. The smugglers dropped several packages and fled back toward the Bangladesh side upon sensing the presence of the troops. The BSF team recovered 6,500 yaba tablets and a significant quantity of brown sugar concealed in plastic containers.
In the second operation carried out early the next morning in Dhalai district, BSF troopers posted at the Raishyabari border post foiled another smuggling attempt. Troops noticed suspicious movement along the border fence and responded immediately. Upon conducting a thorough search of the area, they seized several packets of heroin, foreign cigarettes, and high-value cough syrups commonly used for illicit purposes. The seizure highlights the increasing use of the northeastern corridor for drug trafficking and the growing demand for such substances in the region and beyond.
Senior BSF officials confirmed that the total estimated market value of the seized contraband is close to Rs 3 crore. The narcotics were handed over to local police and the Narcotics Control Bureau for further investigation and legal proceedings. BSF Tripura Frontier has reiterated its commitment to eradicating cross-border smuggling by enhancing patrolling and deploying modern surveillance technology in vulnerable zones.
Officials also highlighted that the smuggling networks operate with a high level of coordination and often involve local carriers who are lured by quick financial gains. The seized goods were likely intended for distribution through local and inter-state networks, which cater to consumers in northeastern states and neighboring regions. BSF has stepped up joint coordination with state police and intelligence agencies to dismantle these smuggling syndicates.
BSF Inspector General Patel K. L. commended the alertness and swift action of the troops involved in the two operations. He stated that the BSF remains vigilant around the clock to prevent the flow of illegal substances that pose a threat to youth and social stability. He also appealed to local residents near border areas to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
Tripura, sharing a long and porous border with Bangladesh, has emerged as a hotspot for drug and contraband trafficking over the years. Law enforcement agencies continue to struggle with new routes and changing tactics used by smugglers to evade detection. In recent months, the BSF has intensified its crackdown with the help of drone surveillance and night vision equipment, particularly in districts identified as high-risk for narcotics movement.
The government of Tripura has expressed concern over the growing incidents of drug trafficking and its impact on local communities. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha recently called for a state-wide anti-drug campaign and urged youth to stay away from narcotics. He also praised the BSF for its dedication and effectiveness in controlling cross-border crimes.
As investigations continue into the two major seizures, BSF and other enforcement agencies are keeping a close watch on the region. Authorities believe that sustained pressure on smuggling routes will gradually weaken the networks and help reduce the supply of illegal drugs into the country. The successful operations in Sepahijala and Dhalai districts have sent a strong message to traffickers that any attempt to smuggle contraband through Tripura will face immediate and decisive action.
