In a significant move to address the grievances of families affected by political violence, the Tripura government has provided government jobs to 18 individuals. These beneficiaries are direct relatives of people who lost their lives in political killings in the state over the years.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath made the announcement on Saturday. Speaking at a press briefing, Nath said the BJP-led government in Tripura remains committed to delivering justice and honour to families that suffered due to political instability and targeted violence in previous regimes.

Acknowledging the Past, Supporting the Present

Nath said, “These 18 people have waited for years for justice. The earlier government ignored their pain. Our government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, stands with those who were wronged.”

The appointments span various departments of the state government. The candidates, mostly sons, daughters, or spouses of victims, were given jobs based on educational qualification and department suitability. They will work in administrative roles, education, and support services.

Long-Awaited Healing for Grieving Families

The families involved were mostly victims of violence during previous regimes, especially between 1993 and 2018. Several incidents had been highlighted by human rights groups in the past, alleging politically motivated attacks and killings, especially during elections.

“We lost our father in a politically motivated attack in 2001,” said Sudip Debbarma, who received a clerical posting. “No one cared for us for years. Today, I feel my father’s sacrifice is finally recognised.”

Political Killings and a Legacy of Violence

Tripura, like many other states in northeast India, has witnessed decades of political unrest and ideological clashes. In several instances, workers of rival parties were targeted and killed. The BJP government claims that political tolerance and peaceful governance have become a priority since the party came to power in 2018.

Nath said this move also sends a message that political violence has no place in a democracy. He urged opposition parties to work together to maintain peace.

Transparent Selection Process, Says Government

The Parliamentary Affairs Minister assured the public that the selection was made transparently. He added that the state followed a process of verification, involving district magistrates and law enforcement, before finalising the list of beneficiaries.

“The state cabinet took a unanimous decision. We studied the cases, verified the claims, and then gave approval. This was not a favour, but a responsibility fulfilled,” Nath added.

A Continuing Effort

The government has hinted that more such appointments may be considered in the coming months. Families who are yet to be compensated have been urged to approach the state grievance redressal cells.

“The BJP believes in sabka saath, sabka vikas. The decision to offer jobs is just one step in ensuring no family feels abandoned due to political injustice,” said Nath.

Public Reaction and Political Response

While the ruling party has garnered appreciation from several quarters, opposition parties have raised questions about whether some selections were politically influenced. A Left leader demanded a white paper on the appointment process.

However, civil society organisations have largely welcomed the initiative. Social activist Rina Das said, “It’s a welcome step. These families lived in silence for decades. Giving them jobs is more than economic relief — it’s recognition.”
