A joint operation by the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) led to the arrest of two suspected drug peddlers and the seizure of over six kilograms of cannabis at Agartala Railway Station on Saturday night.

According to official sources, the operation was conducted following a tip-off about drug smuggling activities through the railway route. At around 9 PM, security personnel intercepted two individuals on Platform No. 1 of Agartala Railway Station. The accused were identified as Nitish Kumar (25), son of Anil Thakur from Bhagalpur district in Bihar, and Chanda Kumari (24), daughter of Jay Prakash Mandal from Kishundaspur in the same district.

During the search, officers recovered one handbag and one rucksack from their possession. The bags contained a total of 6.305 kilograms of dry cannabis (ganja), with an estimated black market value of approximately ₹1 lakh. Authorities confirmed that the duo had planned to transport the contraband to another state using the railway network.

The GRP and RPF detained both accused on the spot and seized the cannabis. Following the operation, a case was registered under Agartala GRPS Case No. 2025GRP091, invoking Sections 20(b)(ii)(B)/29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

The seizure underscores the ongoing vigilance of railway security agencies against the trafficking of narcotics. With Agartala Railway Station serving as a crucial hub in Tripura, the operation highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts between GRP and RPF in curbing illegal drug trade.

Authorities emphasized that strict legal action would be taken against those involved in drug trafficking. The investigation is underway to determine whether the arrested individuals were part of a larger network operating across state borders.
