Tripura has taken a significant leap in its green energy ambitions by rolling out a solar power initiative that aims to cover all government buildings under the renewable energy framework. With over 13,500 families already registered for installations under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the state is showcasing a strong commitment to sustainable development and public participation in the clean energy mission.
The initiative, announced in line with the central government’s vision of a solar-powered future, focuses on reducing reliance on conventional energy sources. Officials revealed that the project will equip government offices, schools, and hospitals with rooftop solar panels, significantly reducing their electricity bills and environmental footprint.
Tripura’s Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath stated that the installation of solar systems would begin in phases, with priority given to high-consumption government buildings. He emphasized that the transition to solar power is not only a financial move but also a step toward creating a resilient and energy-secure future. The state government has already completed feasibility studies for multiple sites and identified contractors for speedy implementation.
The solar power initiative is part of a broader strategy to cut down carbon emissions and promote decentralized energy production. Officials confirmed that each solar panel unit will be connected to a net metering system, enabling buildings to contribute surplus energy to the grid and earn credits. This model has already sparked interest among urban households and small businesses, who see solar power as a reliable and cost-effective energy source.
Citizens’ enthusiasm has added momentum to the state’s efforts. The Department of Power reported that over 13,500 families have registered under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in just a few weeks. This overwhelming response indicates growing awareness of renewable energy benefits and government incentives available to make the switch affordable for all income groups.
Tripura’s push for solar energy also aligns with its climate action goals. According to officials, the state aims to significantly boost its renewable energy capacity by 2030. The government has directed all departments to submit reports on their energy consumption and potential solar deployment areas. Training sessions and awareness drives have been launched to inform staff and residents about the technical and financial aspects of the transition.
In a recent review meeting, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha applauded the public response to the Surya Ghar scheme and reiterated the government’s resolve to make Tripura a model for clean energy adoption in the Northeast. He urged officials to accelerate project timelines and ensure transparent execution.
Urban Local Bodies have also been asked to assist in identifying buildings for installation and help raise public awareness. The Agartala Municipal Corporation is already working with private vendors to scale rooftop solar coverage across residential and commercial properties.
Financial incentives have been a key factor in the project’s traction. Beneficiaries under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana receive up to 60% subsidy on installation costs, with easy financing options provided by designated banks. State officials added that maintenance support and technical assistance will be offered through helpline centres to ensure continued performance of installed units.
Tripura’s solar strategy is not limited to government and urban sectors. The state also plans to explore opportunities in rural areas where power outages are common. Authorities said they will collaborate with rural development bodies and NGOs to install solar mini-grids and standalone systems to power critical services in remote villages.
With the solar initiative gathering speed, Tripura is poised to become one of the leading clean energy adopters in the region. The government’s integrated approach—combining infrastructure, policy support, and citizen participation—signals a new era of sustainable governance in the state.
