Tripura is reeling under the impact of torrential rains that have caused significant damage to homes and forced the displacement of hundreds of residents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for several districts as rivers in the state breach danger levels, sparking concerns of further flooding and landslides.
Heavy Rainfall Causes Widespread Destruction
Since Wednesday night, continuous downpours have battered various parts of Tripura, including West Tripura, Sepahijala, and Gomati districts. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), at least 93 houses have been damaged, and 207 individuals have been relocated to relief camps set up by the local administration.
Many low-lying areas in Agartala and its surroundings have been submerged. Roads in several localities remain waterlogged, severely affecting transportation and communication. Authorities have also reported minor landslides on hilly roads, adding to the disruption.
IMD Issues Red Alert for Tripura
The IMD has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in three districts—West Tripura, Gomati, and Khowai. Officials warn that the intense weather may continue for the next 48 hours. Further, with the potential for cloudbursts and river overflows.
“Citizens are urged to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary,” said a senior IMD official. “Those residing near riverbanks should move to safer areas.”
Local authorities have also advised against travel in flood-prone zones and have initiated emergency helplines for those stranded or in need of evacuation.

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has reviewed the flood situation and directed all district administrations to remain on high alert. “We are monitoring the situation 24×7. Relief materials and emergency teams have been dispatched to all affected areas,” he stated during a press briefing.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are assisting in evacuation efforts. While the Tripura Urban Planning and Development Authority is coordinating relief efforts with municipal bodies.
Medical camps have also been set up in relief shelters to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases. Clean drinking water, dry food, and basic medical aid are being supplied to displaced residents.
Rivers Breach Danger Marks
Rivers like Howrah and Manu have swelled dangerously due to incessant rainfall, flooding nearby areas. In Agartala, the Howrah river has already crossed the danger level, prompting officials to reinforce embankments and deploy pump sets in low-lying zones.
Experts say continued rainfall could lead to urban flooding, especially in densely populated regions of West Tripura. Residents have been advised to unplug electrical appliances. And switch off gas supplies in case of water entering their homes.

The ongoing weather crisis has once again highlighted the climate vulnerability of northeastern states like Tripura, where infrastructure gaps exacerbate natural calamities. Urban planners argue that poor drainage systems and unregulated construction in flood-prone areas have worsened the impact of this week’s rains.
Environmental groups, such as the Tripura Climate Action Forum, have called for more robust flood management systems and climate-resilient infrastructure, especially in urban centres like Agartala.
