Tripura has recorded a 12 percent increase in food grain production this year compared to the previous year, reflecting steady growth in the state’s agriculture sector. The improvement also indicates rising interest among young people in farming activities.
State Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath shared this information on Saturday while inaugurating the State Level Kisan Mela 2025–26 and the conferment ceremony for the State and District Level Best Farmers Awards.
The programme took place at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala and brought together farmers, agriculture experts, and government officials from across the state.

Agriculture Remains Key to Tripura’s Economy
Addressing the gathering, the minister highlighted the crucial role of farmers in ensuring food security and supporting the state’s economy. He said agriculture continues to provide livelihoods for a large section of Tripura’s population.
Nath also referred to the vision of Narendra Modi, who has encouraged people to “produce more, connect more, and export more.” According to the minister, this approach can strengthen India’s agricultural sector and help the country emerge as a global leader.
The minister said the Prime Minister often speaks about four key pillars of society—the poor, youth, women, and farmers. Empowering these sections, he added, would accelerate national development.
“Farmers are the backbone of our economy. The state government continues to work for the development of the agriculture sector,” Nath said.
Large Farming Community in the State
The minister also shared data highlighting the importance of agriculture in Tripura. The state has around 4.72 lakh farmers out of a total population of approximately 42.22 lakh people.
He said the Kisan Mela was organised to recognise the dedication and hard work of farmers who play a vital role in feeding the population. The event also provided a platform to showcase modern agricultural practices and encourage knowledge sharing among farmers.
Promotion of Modern Farming Techniques
Nath explained that Tripura faces geographical challenges due to limited plain land and large forest areas. As a result, the government promotes modern and scientific farming techniques to improve productivity.
Out of the state’s total 65.57 lakh kanis of land, nearly 30.17 lakh kanis are currently used for cultivation. Paddy remains the most widely grown crop and covers about 15 lakh kanis of farmland.
The government continues to introduce improved seeds, modern irrigation methods, and advanced farming techniques to boost production.
Districts Achieving Paddy Self-Sufficiency
The minister also highlighted achievements at the district level. According to him, Sepahijala district has emerged as the leading district in achieving paddy self-sufficiency.
It is followed by South Tripura district and Gomati district. Meanwhile, Khowai district has also achieved self-sufficiency in paddy production this year.
The state government now aims to expand this success to other regions. Officials have begun efforts to make Dhalai district, Unakoti district, North Tripura district, and West Tripura district self-sufficient in paddy production in the coming years.
Officials believe that improved farming practices, government support, and increased youth participation will continue to strengthen Tripura’s agriculture sector and ensure sustainable growth in food production.
