In a proactive move, the Tipra Motha-led Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) is seeking the intervention of Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu to expedite the approval of six pending bills. These bills, including crucial customary laws passed by the council, await the necessary approvals to move forward.

Optimism Amidst Financial Constraints

Chief Executive Member (CEM) Purna Chandra Jamatia expressed optimism about the recent visit of Governor Nallu to the TTAADC headquarters. “This was the governor’s first visit to the TTAADC headquarters, and we had a productive discussion on critical issues,” stated Jamatia.

Financial Struggles: A Call for Assistance

The primary focus of the council’s appeal is the pressing need for financial support. The council highlighted its financial constraints, emphasizing that it received only Rs 450 crore from the state government against its budget of Rs 1,135 crore for the fiscal year 2023-24. With annual employee and pensioner expenses amounting to Rs 689 crore, a substantial funding gap remains for crucial development projects.

Bridging the Funding Gap

To address this financial shortfall, Jamatia sought the governor’s assistance in securing an additional Rs 450 crore. Furthermore, he urged for a clear and specific budget allocation, categorizing funds for committed expenditures and development activities.

During the meeting with Governor Nallu, the executive council of TTAADC also proposed the handover of nine departments to the TTAADC administration. This strategic move is aimed at enhancing efficiency in functioning and monitoring.

Elected Bodies and Development Hurdles

Highlighting a crucial aspect hindering development work, Jamatia pointed out the absence of elected bodies in village committees, similar to gram panchayats. The executive council urged the governor to facilitate immediate elections for these committees to ensure smooth progress in developmental initiatives.

Governor’s Assurance

Governor Nallu attentively listened to the concerns raised by the executive council during the meeting and assured them that he would take up the matters with the appropriate authorities.

This move by the TTAADC showcases a proactive approach in addressing legislative and financial challenges, seeking collaborative solutions for the overall development of the tribal areas in Tripura.
