The Alomganj eviction drive in Assam’s Dhubri district is set to begin this week as the government pushes ahead with major infrastructure projects under the Advantage Assam 2.0 initiative. The drive will clear over 150 acres of land in the Alomganj area, home to hundreds of families for generations.
Authorities say the eviction is necessary to make way for logistics hubs, industrial corridors, and highways that fall under Assam’s flagship development push. However, affected families have raised concerns about displacement, compensation, and lack of rehabilitation plans.

Eviction Targets Land Identified for Industrial Development
Officials from the Dhubri district administration confirmed that Alomganj falls within the core zone of upcoming Advantage Assam 2.0 projects. The area has been earmarked for an integrated trade and logistics park, a river port, and a rural industrial cluster.
Deputy Commissioner Anbamuthan MP held a meeting last week with revenue and police officials to finalize the groundwork. The Alomganj eviction drive is expected to begin with a joint survey of government and encroached land.
According to sources, the first phase of the eviction will cover areas along the NH-17 corridor, which has already been notified for expansion under the project.
Tension Rises as Locals Fear Displacement
Even before the formal notices arrived, residents began organizing protests. Many families say they have lived on the land for decades, cultivating it and building homes. Most of them do not possess formal land documents, though they claim ancestral use.
“We’re not against development,” said 56-year-old Abdul Karim. “But throwing us out without giving land or homes in return is inhuman.”
As news spread, local organizations, including Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), joined the resistance. They are demanding proper compensation, legal land verification, and relocation options before the Alomganj eviction drive proceeds further.
Officials Promise Legal Steps and Welfare Support
In response to the growing unrest, Dhubri district officials have assured that no eviction will occur without prior notice and lawful procedure. Authorities also said that genuine cases of land use will be reviewed under the state’s land settlement laws.
Moreover, government teams are working to assess how many families fall into the “eligible for rehabilitation” category. Transition camps and welfare measures are under discussion.
Still, tensions remain high. While the administration wants a peaceful process, ground-level reports indicate rising anger, especially among daily wage earners who fear losing their only source of livelihood.
Advantage Assam 2.0: What the Project Means
Launched as the next phase of Assam’s investment mission, Advantage Assam 2.0 seeks to attract national and global investors. The Dhubri region plays a strategic role in this blueprint due to its proximity to Bangladesh, river ports, and rail networks.
Therefore, officials believe transforming Alomganj into an industrial hub could create thousands of jobs, boost cross-border trade, and improve logistics. However, to achieve that vision, the government needs large parcels of encumbrance-free land, prompting the Alomganj eviction drive.
According to the state industries department, private players have already expressed interest in setting up agro-processing and warehousing units in the region.
Political and Civil Society Reactions
Political leaders have started weighing in on the situation. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) criticized the BJP-led government for launching evictions during flood season. They claimed the move shows “no sensitivity to the rural poor.”
Congress leaders have also raised concerns over the project’s transparency and environmental impact. Meanwhile, BJP leaders defended the action, arguing that the area will benefit from better infrastructure and employment opportunities.
Civil society groups have urged both sides to focus on humane relocation first. They argue that evictions without rehabilitation could lead to social unrest and long-term instability.
Eviction Plans Moving Forward
Despite opposition, the district administration has not paused its preparations. Officials plan to complete initial ground surveys by next week. Once reports are verified, demolition notices will be issued under Section 18 of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation Act.
Police forces have been asked to remain on alert to prevent clashes during the Alomganj eviction drive. The administration also plans to involve local panchayats to mediate with villagers and avoid confrontation.
