Assam Education Department Officer Arrested For Demanding Bribe

Lachit Basumatary, an official of the Assam Education Department, was arrested on Wednesday, 17th August allegedly for demanding bribe from a woman for processing her post-transfer-related works.

A complaint against Basumatary was filed by the woman’s husband at the state’s Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption and a trap was laid by the Directorate in Basumatary’s office to nab him.

Basumatary is serving as the Block Elementary Education Officer of Rani in the district Kamrup (Rural). He was arrested red-handed by the police in his office chamber along with the bribe which he had received from the complainant’s wife and the money was seized from Basumatary’s possession.

A whopping amount of Rs 1 Lakh was also recovered by the police during the raid and his house is also being searched by the authorities for any further discovery of illegal money under the corrupt officer’s possession.

An FIR against the officer has been registered under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018), as per reports.
