In a significant development, the Assam cabinet has approved the promotion of 1,705 assistant professors in provincialized colleges across the state. Effective from November 8, 2023, this move aligns with government provisions for seamless career progression in the education sector.

The cabinet’s decision includes a noteworthy waiver of the requirement for the submission of IPR (Income and Property Returns) and MPR (Move-Over Property Returns) statements. However, candidates promoted under this decision must submit these documents by March 31, 2024, to ensure the effectiveness of the promotions.

The exemption from documentation requirements, coupled with the promotion initiative, aims to facilitate timely career advancements for assistant professors in provincialised colleges. This strategic step not only supports the academic fraternity but also underscores the commitment to maintaining high standards of teaching and research in the state.

In another noteworthy move, the Assam cabinet has given the nod for the establishment of Swahid Kanaklata Baruah University in Gohpur. The upcoming state university is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing education and research in the region. A draft bill, named ‘Swahid Kanaklata University Bill,’ will be presented in the next Assembly session, marking a significant step towards realizing this educational milestone.

In a commitment to regional development, the cabinet has approved the release of the SOPD-G fund (normal works). This fund, amounting to Rs. 400 crore, serves as the second installment for the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) for the fiscal year 2023-24. The allocation, made under Grants No. 78, is earmarked for comprehensive development initiatives in the Bodoland Territorial Region.
