In response to a disturbing video circulating on social media, the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Imphal West acted decisively on Wednesday, remanding 12 women to three days of judicial custody. This development is linked to the incident depicted in the viral video, where a young lady faced severe assault while lying face down on a bed.

Arrests Tied to Huiyel Mamom Organization

Members of the recently formed Huiyel Mamom, a social-cultural organization in the state, are among the arrested individuals. Their detention follows a suo-motto case registered under FIR No. 06(01)2024 IPS, invoking Sections 326/354/506/34 IPC & 66E IT Act, 2000, at Imphal Police Station.

The video, which surfaced on social media, showed an individual mercilessly beating a young lady with the assistance of others. The incidents occurred on the nights of December 31, 2023, and January 1, 2024, coinciding with New Year celebrations. The lady appeared to be under the influence of alcohol during the assault.

The distressing footage captured the assailant using a baton while others restrained the victim by holding her hands and legs. The lady’s head and hair were forcefully pushed towards the pillow, intensifying the severity of the assault.

The judicial custody of the 12 women signifies the commencement of legal proceedings in response to the assault incident. Authorities are likely to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the details surrounding the case and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Local communities and social activists are expressing concerns over the incident, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and fair inquiry. The arrest of individuals associated with Huiyel Mamom adds a layer of complexity to the situation, prompting discussions about the organization’s role and responsibility in preventing such incidents.
