The Manipur government has communicated to the Centre, expressing concerns about the possibility of renewed tensions escalating in the border town of Moreh. In an official communication from the Manipur home commissioner to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), it was stated that the prevailing situation in Moreh might further deteriorate.
The communique highlighted the alarming state of law and order in Moreh, emphasizing the continuous exchange of gunfire, which has become a serious cause for concern. The Manipur government, foreseeing potential escalation, has requested air services from the Centre for the transportation of personnel and materials to Moreh.
The letter stated, “Police department has also informed that there is also a need for airlifting of security personnel, ammunition, etc. to Moreh.” The Manipur home commissioner urged the MHA to provide air assets, specifically helicopters, to meet the emergency requirements for at least seven days.
The recent escalation of violence in Moreh, situated on the India-Myanmar border in Manipur, has led to heightened security measures, including the imposition of a total curfew in Tengnoupal district.
Fresh violence erupted as security forces engaged in a gunfight with suspected Kuki militants in Moreh, resulting in the tragic death of a police commando. The suspected militants reportedly attacked a security post near SBI Moreh, throwing bombs and firing shots.
In the retaliatory fire, Police Commando W. Somorjit lost his life, while three IRB personnel sustained injuries. The injured were promptly evacuated to the Assam Rifles medical camp at Moreh, and the deceased and injured were later airlifted to a hospital in Imphal.
The violent incidents unfolded amidst an indefinite curfew imposed in the entire Tengnoual district, targeting several security posts, police stations, and populated areas. The attacks, carried out by well-armed militants, raised concerns about the breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquility, and the grave danger posed to human lives and property.
This surge in violence follows the recent arrest of two individuals suspected of killing Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Chingtham Anand Kumar in Moreh on October 31, 2023. The total curfew imposition in Tengnoupal district indicates the authorities’ efforts to curb potential unrest and protect the safety of residents.
