West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari flagged off 226 new firefighting vehicles and equipment in Kolkata on September 23. The new fleet, worth Rs 94 crore, will strengthen the state’s Fire and Emergency Services.
The vehicles were flagged off during a programme at Red Road. Senior officials from the Fire and Emergency Services Department attended the event.
The new fleet will serve fire stations across West Bengal. Officials will focus on densely populated areas, markets, industrial zones and other important urban and semi-urban locations.

226 New Vehicles Added to Fire Services
The new fleet includes three categories of firefighting vehicles.
The largest group consists of 198 mid-size water tenders. Each vehicle has a capacity of 2.5 kilolitres.
The fleet also includes 25 water tenders. Each of these vehicles can carry six kilolitres of water.
Three articulating water towers complete the fleet. Each tower can reach a height of 36 metres.
The state has spent Rs 94 crore on these vehicles and equipment. Their deployment will increase the operational capacity of fire stations across the state.
Fleet to Target High-Risk Areas
The new vehicles will serve locations with higher fire-response requirements.
Fire stations in densely populated neighbourhoods will receive the new equipment. Markets and industrial areas will also receive additional support.
Urban and semi-urban locations are another priority. These areas often have crowded buildings and busy commercial spaces.
The deployment plan aims to improve the ability of firefighters to respond to emergencies. Faster access to modern equipment can support rescue and firefighting operations.
Technology to Play Bigger Role
The state is also planning a wider technology upgrade for its fire services.
The modernisation programme includes firefighting robots and drones. The government also plans to introduce hydraulic platforms and advanced communication systems.
These technologies can support firefighters during complex operations. Drones, for example, can provide aerial information during large fires.
Hydraulic platforms can help firefighters reach higher floors. Advanced communication systems can also improve coordination between teams during emergencies.
The government plans to procure more modern firefighting and emergency-response equipment in the future.
23 New Fire Stations Under Construction
West Bengal is also expanding its fire-service infrastructure.
According to the department, 23 new fire stations are currently under construction. The state Budget has also announced 10 additional fire-station projects.
New stations can improve the geographical reach of emergency services. They can also reduce the distance firefighters need to travel to reach incident locations.
The infrastructure expansion comes alongside the purchase of new vehicles and equipment. Together, these measures aim to strengthen the state’s emergency response network.
1,400 Fire Personnel to Be Recruited
Manpower expansion forms another part of the government’s plan.
Adhikari said the state would recruit 1,400 personnel through the Police Recruitment Board. The recruitment plan includes 1,000 fire operators.
It also includes 325 fire engine operator-cum-drivers. Another 75 positions will be filled by sub-officers.
The state also plans to create 2,500 additional permanent posts in the Fire and Emergency Services Department within the next year.
The recruitment drive is intended to strengthen the workforce alongside the expansion of equipment and infrastructure.
Focus on Firefighter Welfare
The government has also announced measures for fire-service personnel.
Permanent frontline personnel will receive an allowance equivalent to 26 days’ pay each year. Contractual Auxiliary Fire Operators will receive an additional monthly allowance of Rs 2,000.
The government also plans modern barracks and housing facilities for fire personnel in Kolkata.
These measures focus on the working conditions and welfare of firefighters. The state is expanding both operational resources and support for its personnel.
Fire Safety Awareness to Get More Attention
The modernisation plan also includes stronger fire-prevention measures.
Officials will conduct regular fire safety audits and inspections. The department will also organise mock drills and training programmes.
Fire safety awareness can help identify risks before an emergency occurs. Regular inspections can also highlight problems with emergency exits, safety equipment and other arrangements.
The government plans to combine prevention with faster emergency response. The wider strategy covers equipment, technology, infrastructure, manpower and public awareness.
Recent Fire Incidents Highlight Safety Concerns
During the programme, Adhikari referred to two recent fire incidents at Tarapith and New Market lodges.
He said both incidents resulted in fatalities. According to his remarks, the victims died from smoke suffocation rather than burns.
He also questioned the locking of exit points in the buildings. He said such restrictions prevented occupants from leaving during the emergencies.
Adhikari said firefighters rescued 30 people at Tarapith and 80 people at New Market. He also announced medals for the firefighters involved in the rescue operations.
Building a Faster Emergency Response System
The latest fleet forms part of a broader effort to strengthen West Bengal’s emergency response system.
The state is combining new vehicles with additional fire stations and recruitment. It is also planning greater use of technology.
The new fleet will give firefighters access to different types of water tenders and high-reach equipment. This can help teams respond to fires in different environments.
