The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Tripura, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall from June 16 to June 18. The alert follows the formation of active cyclonic systems in the Bay of Bengal that are expected to impact the northeastern states, including Tripura.
Authorities have urged residents to stay alert as the weather system may cause flooding, landslides, and damage to infrastructure.
IMD Predicts Intense Rainfall
According to the IMD’s Agartala office, several districts in Tripura may receive over 100 mm of rainfall per day. Thereafter, the worst-affected areas are likely to be South Tripura, Gomati, Dhalai, and North Tripura districts.
“Cyclonic circulation is intensifying over the eastern Bay of Bengal. Moisture-laden winds from the system are likely to bring widespread downpour across Tripura,” said Dr. A K Debbarma, Regional Meteorological Director.
Strong winds up to 60 kmph are also predicted, along with lightning in isolated areas.
Government Puts Disaster Response Teams on Alert
The Tripura State Disaster Management Authority (TSDMA) has activated control rooms in all districts. Relief teams have been asked to remain on standby. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is also monitoring the situation and may be deployed if required.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha held an emergency meeting with officials from the Revenue, PWD, and Home departments to review preparedness.
“All departments must work in coordination. Although, we are focusing on low-lying areas and flood-prone zones. Safety of life and property is our top priority,” said Dr. Saha.
Schools and Transport May Be Affected
The state education department is likely to issue advisories to schools in vulnerable areas. District collectors have been empowered to declare holidays if weather conditions worsen.
Public transport services, including buses and auto-rickshaws, may face delays or suspensions, especially in hilly and forested routes.
Officials have also asked the public to avoid traveling during heavy rainfall periods unless absolutely necessary.
Farmers Advised to Take Precaution
Tripura’s agriculture department has issued a weather advisory to farmers. They have been advised to postpone sowing, secure stored produce, and ensure drainage in fields.
“Sudden, excessive rainfall can damage standing crops and newly planted seeds. We’re asking farmers to stay in touch with local Krishi Vigyan Kendras for timely updates,” said Agriculture Secretary Samarjit Nath.
Past Experiences Prompt Caution
Tripura has a history of landslides and flash floods during the monsoon season. In July 2022, similar conditions led to the evacuation of over 5,000 people and disrupted road and rail connectivity for several days.
Learning from past experiences, district administrations are conducting mock drills and inspecting flood control systems such as embankments, sluice gates, and storm drains.
Citizens Urged to Stay Informed
The government has urged citizens to follow weather updates issued by the IMD and stay away from rivers, landslide-prone zones, and unstable structures. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into deep waters during the alert period.
Daily weather bulletins are available on the Tripura State Portal and the IMD website. Citizens can also subscribe to SMS alerts through the “Meghdoot” and “Damini” apps for real-time weather warnings.
