Tripura Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury held a virtual meeting with Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) on September 28. The meeting focused on preparations for a statewide food security awareness drive.

The initiative aims to ensure that eligible residents understand the food security schemes available to them. It also seeks to improve awareness about beneficiaries’ rights and entitlements under the Public Distribution System (PDS).

Chowdhury asked officials to take the awareness campaign to the grassroots level. He stressed the need for coordinated action among departments and field-level officials.

Focus on major food security schemes

The meeting reviewed awareness activities linked to several central food security programmes. These include the National Food Security Act (NFSA), Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) and One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC).

These programmes provide eligible beneficiaries with access to subsidised food grains and other services through the public distribution system.

The minister asked officials to ensure that people receive clear information about the benefits available under these schemes. He also stressed the importance of explaining the procedures in simple and accessible language.

SDMs asked to take campaign to grassroots

Sub-Divisional Magistrates will play an important role in implementing the awareness programme across Tripura. The minister directed them to organise local-level programmes and reach eligible beneficiaries in their respective areas.

The campaign will focus on helping people understand their entitlements. Officials will also explain the ration facilities and provisions available under different food security schemes.

A grassroots approach could help reach people who may not have adequate information about government welfare programmes.

Push for better coordination among departments

Chowdhury also emphasised coordination between different government departments and field officials. He said effective cooperation would help the awareness programme reach more people.

Officials at the local level often interact directly with beneficiaries. Their involvement can therefore help identify gaps in awareness and address questions raised by residents.

The minister called for a public-oriented approach during the implementation of the campaign. He asked officials to keep eligible beneficiaries at the centre of the outreach programme.

Public Distribution System remains central

The PDS remains a key component of Tripura’s food security framework. The state Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department manages the distribution of food grains and essential commodities to eligible ration-card holders.

The National Food Security Act provides the legal framework for food-grain entitlements for eligible households. Tripura’s official NFSA portal lists Sushanta Chowdhury as the state’s Food Minister and identifies the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department as the responsible department.

Awareness programmes can help beneficiaries understand how the system works and where they can seek assistance when they face difficulties.

One Nation One Ration Card highlighted

The One Nation One Ration Card scheme also forms part of the awareness campaign. The scheme allows eligible beneficiaries to access their food-grain entitlements through portability across participating areas.

This can be particularly useful for migrant workers and families who move between different locations. Awareness about the facility can help eligible beneficiaries use their ration entitlements even when they are away from their usual place of residence.

Officials will therefore need to communicate the available facilities clearly during local outreach programmes.

Awareness aimed at reaching eligible beneficiaries

The main objective of the campaign is to bridge the information gap between welfare schemes and their intended beneficiaries.

People may remain unaware of available benefits, eligibility conditions or procedures even when government programmes exist. Local awareness programmes can provide a direct channel for explaining these provisions.

Chowdhury’s instructions to SDMs are aimed at ensuring that information reaches communities at the grassroots level rather than remaining limited to government offices.

Tripura continues focus on food security

Tripura has continued to focus on strengthening its food distribution system and ensuring the availability of essential commodities. The Food Department has also recently reviewed supply and prices of essential goods across the state.

The department’s responsibilities include maintaining the PDS, monitoring essential commodity supplies and protecting consumer interests. The state’s development framework also identifies an efficient PDS as an important tool for ensuring food security, particularly for vulnerable communities and people living in remote areas.

Campaign seeks stronger public access to welfare schemes

The latest meeting underlines the government’s focus on improving awareness of food security programmes in Tripura. By involving SDMs and other field-level officials, the administration aims to take information directly to local communities.

The success of the Tripura food security awareness drive will depend on effective coordination and the ability of officials to reach eligible beneficiaries across urban, rural and remote areas.

The initiative is expected to help more residents understand their food entitlements and make better use of the welfare schemes available through the public distribution system.
