In a celebration of artistic diversity, Tripura is poised to host its first-ever ‘Tripura International Puppet Festival’ commencing on February 26. This unique festival promises a cultural extravaganza with the participation of puppet theatre groups not only from various Indian states but also from countries like the United States, Brazil, Spain, and Bangladesh.

Prabhitangsu Das, Director of Tripura Puppet Theatre group, shared insights into the festival’s lineup. Over the three days, from February 26 to 28, puppet theatre enthusiasts can witness captivating performances by groups representing the US, Brazil, Spain, Bangladesh, as well as six groups hailing from New Delhi, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and the host state, Tripura.
This international puppet festival holds special significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of Tripura Puppet Theatre. The event not only showcases the rich cultural tapestry of Tripura but also serves as a platform for global cultural exchange through the medium of puppetry.
On the concluding day, February 28, a seminar titled “Theatre and Puppetry: Effective Tools of Learning and Awareness” is scheduled. This thoughtful addition to the festival aims to delve into the educational and awareness aspects of these traditional art forms.
Tripura Puppet Theatre’s Impactful Initiatives
Prabhitangsu Das, a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2016, highlighted the contributions of the Tripura Puppet Theatre group. Besides enthralling audiences with puppet shows on diverse themes, the group has been instrumental in providing free training to aspiring artists. During the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic, the group utilized the traditional art of “Putul Nach” (puppet dance) for a massive awareness campaign, earning widespread attention and appreciation.
