Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing the development of a multilingual education system in the state. Aligning with the NEP-2020, the Tripura government aims to promote linguistic diversity and inclusivity.
Promotion of Mother Tongue
CM Manik Saha highlighted the government’s efforts in promoting the mother tongue of all ethnic tribes in the Northeast state. Students now have the opportunity to study in eight tribal languages, including Kokborok, across schools in Tripura.
The National Education Policy 2020 emphasizes the significance of fostering a multilingual education system nationwide. Tripura CM Manik Saha reiterated the government’s active implementation of various initiatives in line with the NEP-2020.
During a program commemorating International Mother Language Day, the Chief Minister underscored the government’s commitment to honoring all languages. Kokborok has been introduced in 1296 primary schools, 115 secondary schools, and 65 higher secondary schools. Additionally, Chakma language has been incorporated into 123 schools, expanding linguistic diversity in education.
In Tripura, education in Kokborok and Mizo languages is available up to the 12th standard. Aspiring job candidates can write competitive exams like the Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) and Tripura Judicial Service in Kokborok.
The day was celebrated with a vibrant rally in the city, marking International Mother Language Day on February 21. This annual observance aims to promote linguistic and cultural diversity as well as multilingualism, reflecting Tripura’s commitment to embracing linguistic inclusivity.
