In a move aimed at strengthening the Public Distribution System (PDS), the Tripura government launched the distribution of spices through Fair Price shops. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha inaugurated the new project during a ceremony held at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala. The event was attended by Sushanta Chowdhury, the Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, along with other officials.
During his address at the programme, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed the government’s commitment to providing essential items to every individual in society at subsidized prices, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The distribution of spices through the PDS is a significant step towards achieving this goal. Furthermore, the government is contemplating the inclusion of mustard oil in the PDS, which will further expand the range of essential commodities available to the public.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha recognized the crucial role played by ration dealers in distributing essential items to the people. He also hinted at the government’s consideration of introducing smart ration cards and health insurance for ration dealers, acknowledging their contribution to the effective functioning of the PDS.
The Chief Minister explained that four types of spices will be available in the ration shops as part of the new initiative. The government is committed to supporting local companies through e-tendering processes, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “local for vocal” slogan. The improved connectivity in Tripura, including the upcoming Maitri Setu bridge, the development of national highways, and increased air connectivity, will attract investors and transform the face of the state. The Chief Minister highlighted the government’s efforts to build a prosperous Tripura, known as “Shrestha Tripura.”
This event marked the first time that the state government organized a programme involving ration dealers from all eight districts. The Chief Minister commended the Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs department for spearheading this initiative and bringing together various stakeholders.
M/s Annada Spices Industries has been assigned the responsibility of supplying Langtarai spices through the PDS via the e-tendering process, according to the Food Minister. This partnership ensures the availability of quality spices to the public through Fair Price shops.
Minister Sushanta Chowdhury acknowledged the suggestions and concerns raised by the ration dealers during the programme. He assured them that the government would carefully consider their proposals to improve the overall service quality of the PDS.
