Following the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, the Tripura police have arrested another youth for allegedly posting “anti-national” remarks on social media. This marks the second such arrest in the state within just a few days, triggering debates over national security, freedom of speech, and online conduct.
The arrest took place in the Sepahijala district of Tripura on Monday evening. According to police sources, the accused, a 21-year-old college student, allegedly made derogatory comments about Indian security forces and attempted to justify the terrorist attack that claimed the lives of several soldiers in Pahalgam on April 25.

Police Action and Legal Grounds
Senior police officials stated that a suo motu case was registered after screenshots of the accused’s Facebook post went viral, prompting outrage and concern among local residents. The youth was booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 153A (promoting enmity between groups), Section 505 (statements conducing to public mischief), and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.
Tripura’s Director General of Police (DGP), Amitabh Ranjan, confirmed the arrest and stated:
“We will not tolerate any form of anti-national activity, especially when the country is mourning the loss of brave soldiers. Social media is not a space for spreading hate or supporting terrorism.”

The Pahalgam terror attack, which occurred on April 25, targeted an Indian Army convoy in South Kashmir. At least four soldiers lost their lives, and several others were injured. Tripura High Court advocate Ranjit Saha remarked:
“Anti-national content should be dealt with sternly, but the context and intent behind social media posts must be carefully examined. Arrests should not become the default response.”

The Tripura government has issued an advisory urging citizens to refrain from making or sharing inflammatory or false content on social media. The advisory stressed the importance of responsible digital citizenship, particularly during sensitive national events.
Officials also hinted at enhanced monitoring mechanisms and collaboration with cybercrime units to preempt such incidents in the future.
