Towards upgrading urban infrastructure and addressing rising traffic congestion, the Town Development Council of Assam has announced the construction of a state-of-the-art Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Sribhumi. The announcement was made by newly appointed Chairman Bishwarup Bhattacharya. During a press conference held in Guwahati on Thursday.
The new terminal will serve as a central transit hub for thousands of passengers commuting daily between Assam and neighboring states. Officials said the ISBT is designed to decongest city roads, offer improved travel experience, and support the region’s growing need for structured public transportation.
A Modern Facility with Wide Reach
According to Bhattacharya, the project is a part of Assam’s larger push to modernize public amenities. And streamline regional transport. The terminal will cover 15 acres and feature dedicated arrival and departure bays. Also, digital ticket counters, waiting lounges, sanitation blocks, food courts, and multi-level parking.
“The Inter-State Bus Terminal in Sribhumi is not just an infrastructure addition but a necessity for the city’s long-term transport vision. It will cater to both short and long-distance travelers. Helping in reducing unnecessary vehicle load in city centers,” Bhattacharya said.
Reducing Congestion and Supporting Growth
Urban congestion has been a growing concern in Sribhumi and surrounding areas, especially during peak hours. The proposed terminal is expected to reduce the volume of buses entering the city core. Also, rerouting them through peripheral zones.
Experts from the Assam Urban Infrastructure Investment Program (AUIIP) stated that by shifting interstate and intercity bus operations to a modern terminal outside dense areas, pollution levels and fuel waste can be significantly reduced.
Timeline and Investment
The project is expected to commence later this year, with land surveys and technical planning already underway. Construction will be carried out in phases, with the first phase scheduled for completion by mid-2027.
Officials estimate a budget of approximately Rs 320 crore, funded jointly by the Assam government and financial support from multilateral development banks such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB). A portion of the project’s cost may also be covered through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs).
Economic and Employment Benefits
Apart from infrastructure gains, the new ISBT is expected to create 500+ direct and indirect employment opportunities, including positions in construction, operations, logistics, and local vending businesses. Stakeholders believe the project will stimulate growth in Sribhumi’s micro-economy.
Transport officials added that better connectivity would attract more investment to the area, particularly in hospitality, retail, and transport logistics sectors.
Collaboration with Transport Agencies
The Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) has welcomed the move. And confirmed its involvement in the terminal’s design and operations planning. Officials are working closely with private bus operators. Ensuring that routes and services are seamlessly integrated once the terminal becomes operational.
“The terminal will ensure that passengers have access to reliable, comfortable, and safe bus services across states like West Bengal, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland,” said an ASTC spokesperson.
Public Reaction and Way Forward
Residents of Sribhumi and local traders have largely welcomed the project, with many highlighting the long-standing need for a well-managed transport hub. Civic bodies have called for community participation during planning and construction phases to ensure the terminal caters to local needs.
Chairman Bhattacharya said, “We urge citizens, transport unions, and businesses to cooperate and participate in feedback drives. We aim to set a model for future urban infrastructure projects in Assam.”
