The Assam Police has arrested the West Bengal President of Popular Front of India (PFI) from Delhi. The arrested accused are accused of promoting communal conflict along with terrorist activities.
According to the information, the Assam Police was getting information about the involvement of PFI leader Minarul Sheikh in anti-national activities. Searching police arrested him from the national capital and took him to Guwahati. He has been booked under various sections of the IPC related to sedition, criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity and assault to deter public servant from discharge of duty.
Apart from Sheikh, the police had arrested PFI activist Bajrul Karim from Karimganj in Assam on Thursday. Karim is the General Secretary of the Barak Valley District Committee of the PFI and a member of the State Executive Committee. With Sheikh’s arrest, Assam Police has so far arrested 11 members of the PFI. Nine of which have been sent to police custody.
Of the ten PFI members arrested from Assam, four are from Nagarbera in Kamrup district, two from Guwahati and one each from Karimganj, Barpeta, Baksa and Nagaon districts. Police said they were brought to Guwahati and interrogated separately at the special branch headquarters.
The Assam Police says that there is credible information that they were trying to fuel communal conflict in the northeastern state. Police say that the arrested accused were indulging in inciting communal passion and sentiments of religious minorities by criticizing every policy of the government in a communal tone with the aim of terming it an attack on the Muslim community. The police claimed that they were using cyber space extensively to instigate people to take up court issues and orders outside the state.
